SPLENDID The Roger Brookes Bequest to TJC
This exhibition from 28 Sep 2022 – 28 Feb 2023 will welcome to TJC (The Johnston Collection) in East Melbourne a magnificent bequest from Mr. Clive Hele (Roger) Brookes (1929 – 2020). It is a lasting legacy of his discerning connoisseurship and enthusiasms as a collector.
The Brookes Bequest of English silver focuses on the Georgian and Regency periods but ranges from the late 16th century to the mid-19th century. It includes a vast array of objects from ecclesiastical cups, argyles (gravy warmers), tea & coffee pots, porringers, tankards and trophies, to serving salvers and dishes and includes items by notable women and Huguenot silversmiths.
The collection was amassed from 1928 to 2020, initially by gifts and bequests from Roger’s mothers’ family which were the genesis of the collection. His parents Betty Brookes and Wilfred Deakin Brookes made many significant additions to the collection in the 1960s.
It was then added to in a deliberate and very focussed manner by Mr. Roger Brookes for over two decades.
